How to Pay for Summer Classes

How to Pay for Summer Classes

BIG Ideas:

  •  Attending classes over the summer can help you make up credit or get ahead to graduate early.
  •  Financial aid can be used to pay for summer classes, but you must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to qualify.
  • A private loan is a great way to fill the gap where financial aid and other savings leave off.

Long, lazy days. Cannonballs in the pool. Mouth-watering barbecues. What’s not to love about summer? It’s the season for fun.

For some, though, it can be a season to learn and take summer classes.

Sure, hitting the books during summer may not sound like fun, but it can help you catch up if you need to make up credits. Or even better, help you get ahead and finish college sooner, build your adult life, and start bringing in some money (super fun!).

If you’re seriously considering taking classes over the summer, you must answer an important question: How will you afford it?

Here are some tips to help you:

  • Apply for financial aid. The good news is that financial aid can be used to help pay for summer classes. But before you get financial aid, you must fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and meet eligibility requirements. To learn more about applying for financial aid for summer classes, check with your school’s financial aid office.
  • Apply for scholarships and grants. More good news! There are many scholarships and grants offered by states, non-profit organizations, and colleges. While grants provide free money usually based on need, scholarships can be awarded on merit or for skills or specific interests you have. At Brazos, we award $6,000 in scholarships monthly to Texas students. Learn more about our scholarship opportunities.
  • Get a summer job or side hustle. If after applying for federal aid, you still need help, you could get a job or start a business, which can help you earn the money you need to pay for school. Learn about other ways to pay for school.
  • Apply for a private loan. Private loans offered by private lenders like Brazos can help you afford college costs not covered by financial aid, scholarships, and savings. Keep in mind, that many private lenders have a minimum amount of hours you need to be enrolled in to be approved. Learn about important steps to take before you apply for a private loan.
  • Ask your college about a payment plan. To help students afford the expense of summer classes, many colleges offer payment plans that allow you to stretch the costs over a longer period. Talk to your school’s financial office.
  • Take virtual classes. You can avoid paying room and board during the summer session if you sign up to take classes virtually or at a community or other college near your home. Just make sure the credits are transferrable.
